As opposed to the world-view of Afghan women, the book And the Mountains Echoed, has a character Nila Wahdati who is a representation of Khaled Hosseini’s memory of the Afghan women he saw when he was a teenager.
“There would be really striking women in short skirts,” he recalls. “Beautiful, very outspoken, temperamental, endlessly – in my young mind – interesting. Drinking freely, smoking. Nila is a creation from my memory of that kind of woman from that time and that place.”
And the Mountains Echoed was written by Khaled Hosseini. It was published in 2013.
